It’s getting cold out and that means so many fun things not limited to but including warm fires, football, happiness, hot soup, apples, pumpkins, pumpkin spice, cuddling, hot cacao, winter squash, Christmas, baking, snow, happiness, more cuddling, and also cold and flu season (not so fun).
In my opinion, the best way to combat sickness is to prevent it by giving your body the best chance it has to fight any bugs it comes into contact with. This includes of course getting good sleep, taking a probiotic, proper nutrition and supplementation, and supporting the body with nature’s anti-viral and anti-bacterial remedies.
A quick google search will give you hundreds of different natural remedies for colds and the flu, some appealing, some not so much. However, why not make a popular fall/winter treat into an immune boosting, cold preventing machine? I think so.
Now, it’s important to note that this is still more of a treat than any sort of “treatment”. If you are truly very sick, there are far more potent natural remedies to try. However, if you are going to have a hot cup of apple cider (which I most certainty am a few times this winter) why not make it into something that can support your body’s immune system and provide health benefits?
I love hot apple cider, made from fresh pressed apples from the backyard. You know, the kind that you have to mix up before you pour because it still has all the good stuff in it.
The Good Stuff
Fresh Pressed Apple Cider: Of course it is always better to consume the whole fruit, but for the purposes of hot apple cider, be sure you are choosing fresh as possible, cloudy, true apple cider. The more cloudy the juice, the more antioxidants are still present (4).
To kick this beverage into high gear though, we need to add some extra players including:
Cinnamon: Cinnamon, aside from being delicious, has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties and is a well loved immune boosting remedy during cold and flu season (1,2).
Turmeric: Turmeric (curcumin specifically) is a known anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and has been shown to modulate the immune system and boost antibody response (3).
Black Pepper: Piperine in black pepper substantially increases the bioavailiability of curcumin.
Raw Apple Cider Vinegar: Raw apple cider vinegar, the kind with clouds and strings or “the mother”, is a full of beneficial vitamins and probiotic boosting compounds (5). Of course, probiotics and a healthy gut are essential for good immune function.
- 16 oz Fresh Pressed Apple Cider
- 1 Tsp to 1 Tbsp Raw Apple Cider Vinegar (depending on how much you can tolerate)
- One Cinnamon Stick
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric
- 1/4 tsp Black Pepper
- Heat Cider in a sauce pan and simmer with the cinnamon stick for 5-10 minutes.
- Pour into a mug and add other ingredients, stirring with the cinnamon stick.
- Snuggle next to a warm fire and enjoy!
Now, this isn’t very sweet, it is in fact spicy! If you are a big sweet tooth, try adding a teaspoon of raw honey, which has it’s own health benefits.
